Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

2008 = 10 races, 3 PR's, 1 first place in age division

I started running in 2006 at age 38/39.  I figured the best way to kick the smoking habit for good was to sign up for a marathon.  (I tend to be alittle extreme)

My first full marathon was the Chicago Marathon 2006 (cold, rainy year) 5:00

Full Marathons: Chicago, Kentucky Derby

Half Marathons:  Indy, Chicago Distance Classic (3 times cool medal), Holy Half (Notre Dame), IU's Inaugural, Joker's Wild (St Louis), Oak Brook Half (ugly medal),Valparaiso Mini, Flying Pig, Virginia Beach Rock N Roll  Times ranging from 2:30 to 2:00.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I really would like to qualify for Boston in 2009.

Personal:

I'm married to an incredible guy, Brian for 20 years (21 in May)!!  We have an amazing 17 year old (soon to be 18) daughter, Heather.  The two are my support system and cheerleaders.

I used this race as just a fun training run, I didn't do it for time just an awesome trail race.  Rough terrain, slimy mud, hills, tree roots.  What a blast!!!  Jen came in 27th in women division!! Good times.

Sounds like you had fun! Can you keep me updated on some of the other races that will be taking place in the area in late Jan/Feb/early March? I've got to plan to do a few with my dad because he still pays my entry fee ;)

a.m. Recovery run with Jen in Rolling Prairie.  You definately use different muscles in trail vs. road running.  I'm not as rough as I thought I'd be, but really needed to do a run today :)

My lower leg (where I thought there was a stress fracture) was pretty sore on the run.  So I came to the conclusion that it might be the "adventure" or trail races.  From running on uneven ground where your foot is constantly trying to stabilize. Grooves in the half frozen mud....etc.  It won't keep me from doing another one, I'm just  alittle more cautious.

Okay.... this weeks goal....running 6 days (again).  Sun 4  Mon 4 or 5  Tues 5  Thurs 5 Fri 5 Sat 5.

I like the idea of posting set of goals for the week! I'll have to give that some thought.

Also, I bet you're right about your soreness being a result of running on uneven surfaces. Hope the soreness fades soon!

a.m. Treadmill 4 miles. It was work this morning to stay on the treadmill. What keeps me going is knowing there is no chance to reach my goal if I don't  stick with the plan.

p.m. Weight Trained at the gym. Upper body.  You can tell it's the beginning of the year, there was twice the amount of people.

Don't you hate that! Church is the same way. ;) I am thinking- good to start all anew and stuff, but it's what you are doing all the time that really counts. I love February... all the crowds diminish and I am back to being the lone runner :)

Nice miles!

I like your January goal! You should join our contest- the first person to skip a day (6 days a week, at least 2 miles) has to take the rest out to dinner :)

From Becca on Wed, Jan 07, 2009 at 01:47:51

I think I would be really self-conscious to start going to the gym right after the new year...I'd probably wait on that resolution until February or so. There were a few "resolutioners" out on the track when my running group met at the gym on Saturday and we almost started taking bets on how many Saturdays we'd see them out there.

p.m. Ran La Porte with Jen and Rick.  It was a strain pretty much the whole way.  My leg was sore, actually both of them were sore.  I got home in time to watch Biggest Loser.  My favorite show.  Ok it's about the only tv show I watch.  It amazes me to see the transformations.  Although each season there's more crying, that gets old! Jodi rule would be... if you cry your outa here.

Oh.....and my Garmin Forerunner came.  I tried figuring it out last night. YIKES! There's alot of stuff.  I have freakishly small wrists so it hangs over but that's okay, Im not making a fashion statement.  Although Heather came home, laughed and said oh mom....I'm sorry, it didn't look that big at the store.

From Becca on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 09:22:45

That's exciting! Which Garmin is it? I have the 205 I think and it took me a while to get used to that big thing on my wrist! Especially because I typically wear my watch "upside down" (with the face on the inside of my wrist). I've had mine for 3 years I think and I'm still not familiar with all the bells & whistles. Or how to tell the regular time on it, so I always have to wear my other watch on my right hand. But like you said...not trying for a fashion statement!

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 12:25:33

I like to watch the weight-loss shows too. It is amazing how people change so much!

From Jodi on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 21:24:44

Becca - it's the 305. I havent used it yet. Thinking I'll break it out Sunday.

April - did you watch this episode? It was so sad to see such big boys for being so young (19 years old).

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Jan 09, 2009 at 08:21:34

No I missed the episode! --but I did see the preview and that's a big road to travel for such a young man--he was 400+ if I remember the preview correctly. I hope he is able to reclaim his health.

My goal was 5 miles for today so I came home and jumped (not really, I ran) on the treadmill for a mile.  :)

I finished out the week most of my goals.  Ran 6 times, Friday's run I cut short by 2 miles due to time restraint and didn't finish it up in the evening because I was sore on the right lower leg again.  Wanted to make sure I could get the 5 miles in today.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

a.m. Ran with Greg, Jen & Rick in Rolling Prairie. Tested out my new Garmin gadget. (Although I really didnt know what I was doing). The first leg of the run okay maybe leg and a quarter.... the only thing it was keeping track of was the time.  Apparently I needed to turn gogo gadget on when I was standing outside... got that figured out then came home downloaded, and it's pretty cool to see the charts of elevation, speed, bpm.  Can't wait til I figure out what that all means and all the "cool stuff" this thing can do.

Have a good day! Im off to cleaning and cooking.

a.m.  Treadmill.  I was suppose to run with Greg & Rick afterwork in town but there's a severe winter storm warning and blizzard watch up to 35 mph winds. Whiteouts expected.  ( I kinda sound like a forcaster). Anyway decided to run on the treadmill again just to make sure I got the miles in.  Plus I DONT WANT TO GET RAN OVER!!!

a.m. Treadmill. Today was easy to run on the treadmill. My daughter was playing Wii Guitar Hero so I had her turn it up.... LOUD and I ran while she played 80's rock.   It was actually kinda fun.  I asked her if she would get up at 4 am when I get to my 10 mile a day stage so we could do it again.  It went over better than I thought it would.

YAY.... I did it again.  Met my goal for the week!!!! (6 days - 5 miles each). One more week of the same then I'll increase mileage alittle.  I'm excited :)

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Feb 14, 2009 at 18:58:11

Have you ever raced a 5 K? If you have not raced one recently, give it a try. It is important to know how much 5 K speed you have to know how to target your training. Do not taper for the race, just treat it as your regular training run. If you do not want to pay an entry fee you can just measure out a course and do a time trial.

From Jodi on Sat, Feb 14, 2009 at 22:00:51

I walked in changed into outside running clothes, ran 4 miles, came back into house changed into inside running clothes (it was getting dark out) ran 3 miles on the treadmill.  Wiped down the treadmill with Lysol wipes. Went into home gym weight trained Shoulders. Ran upstairs, took a shower, did dishes, made salads for the week, cooked supper and was just finishing stuff up when Brian walked in from working out at gym.  Sometimes I amaze myself.

I had my first "my only child's going to college 3 hours away meltdown".

Ok... looks like today is my rest day. I spent 2 hours in a dentist chair. It's been a little over an hour and 3/4 of my face is still numb.  Grrr.  I'd probably end up slipping in my drool, biting my tongue (literally) or smacking myself in the eye with my flopping lip.

This is the first week in 7 weeks that I didn't make my goal. Bummed. But that's okay, getting over it and moving on.  Heather spilled pink nail polish on fairly new carpet in morning. She was running late for school and I had to be to work on time....so instead of running in the evening I spent my time (2 1/2 hours) trying to get out the polish.  It wasn't just a little from the brush. The bottle dropped of the dining room table, splattered on floor, out of reaction she picked up quickly which added more mess, flinging it further. Accidents happen.  It could have very easily happened to me. I ended up taking scissors and snipping out most of it because it stayed pretty much at the top of the carpet pile. Shew.

I promise! IT is a rule! IT has to follow winter. I think Benjamin Franklin said it, so it must be so ;)

FIVE on the treadmill!!! Give that woman a prize! I am so impressed :) I am going to make up a cool name like Rolling Prairie for around here! The gauntlet of Death- when you run by the highschool. Hunters Haven or Big Useless Tuck Alley, for the canyon road. Hummm... I am going to work on this! Have a great weekend!

Ok...I could think of a gazillion excuses. Bottom line was I was lazy.  It was cold and windy and I didn't want to face the treadmill.

So..... I missed my goal this week.  Next week is a fresh start.

Today was Greg's 54th birthday. He has a tradition of running 10 miles on his birthday.  This year I, Jen, Brian and Molly joined him.  We had a lot of fun.  Brian and Molly (newbies) commited to 8 miles.  At first it was snowing with 12-20 mph wind gusts. But the snow stopped and it was just a great run.

This week's goals:

Su 10

Mo 6

Tu 8

Th 8

Fr 7

Sa 8

I had 8 miles scheduled.  Ran in Rolling Prairie with Jen and Greg. It was so incredibly windy (not to mention the rain).  I was wiped out after 5.  Great resistance training. I wish the rain was summer rain....(warmer).

I'm going to sneak out and get a run in this morning.  Heather has a GR formal dance tonight.  So it'll be all about her later.  (my choice).   :)

Yay!!!  I got it finished. 8 miles outside.  Windy but had Heather drop me off so the wind was to my back most of the time.

Hi Jodi, YES I am okay...just not in my normal internet habits here... all of my bookmarks are on my computer that's in transit. I've been running a few days a week at the gym on the treadmill, and I think today I may brave the great (cold!) outdoors!

Thanks for checking up on me!

a.m. Treadmill walked 1 ran 1.   I was short on time and planned to finish up miles after work.  (Forgetting it was basketball sectionals and possibly Heather's last game to cheer at).  So, went to the game (we lost).  I'm glad we went, I have a lifetime to run.

p.m. Ran outside, it's starting to get warmer out. Yippee.  By complete surprise, my shin splints kicked in from pretty much the start of the run until about mile 3.  Half way around I was seriously thinking about quitting and calling my daughter for a  ride. This IS SO STINKIN AGGREVATING!!!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

p.m. Ran Rolling Prairie with Greg, Jen, Rick and Dale.  It was really windy (39 mph winds) but only for 1/2 of the run.  I iced during the day, then took Advil and a couple Aleve. So my legs felt better..... or maybe I just didn't feel them.

Lunch Walked at lunch with Kelly and Mickie. It was absolutely beautiful outside, very hard to return.  I just checked my gogo gadget we walked between 3-4 mph. Not bad for a lunch hour stroll.  My shins were screamin pretty much the whole time.  It starts from my ankles to my inside calves.

p.m.  Looking for an excuse not to run....(being honest).  FOUND ONE.... went for a motorcycle ride after work. Then came home, made dinner, watched a tv show and went to sleep.

From Jodi on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 22:08:24 from 72.2.132.206

Yeah, I think so. I'm icing, stretching, started back to cross training and I'm going to give myself more recovery time between running days.

Went to gym. Weight trained shoulders and legs. Bike 20 minutes.

Needing to change my training alittle.  The few months of 6 times a week is not the right program for me.  I'm pretty sure my body just needs more non-running days.  It stinks getting older.

Wow! I didn't even notice your city! How cool! I may be running a 10 miler in Valpo in April...What is your next race?

From Jodi on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 22:20:36 from 72.2.132.206

Actually, I might do the Valpo Mini April 11th. My daughter and I get home from Springbreak vacation on the 9th. So I might do it as a training run. I'm not committing to it until I get home. The only "official race" (means I've already signed up) on my schedule is the Rock N Roll Chicago Half marathon. (Formerly Chicago Distance Classic).

From april27 on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 08:07:03 from 99.188.251.180

I thought about that one...but the LRS that I am running with is training for the 10 miler...it was my attempt to stay running through the winter...i may run a fall 1/2...not sure...

i just got the email about the June chicago 1/2. Is that the one you are signed up for? Or the one in Sept? I did that one last year...too crowded for me!

what marathon are you doing in May? Mine is in June :)

From Marion on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 09:43:33 from 71.213.125.164

PS- I am going to do Hal Higdons Novice II plan. It's lower miles than I am doing now, but I think it will be good for the aging leggos ;)

Hal Higdon lives about 15 minutes from me. I have used his program in the past. :). I'll try to post more later. My daughter's cheerleading season is coming to an end so that should free up more time. I to have dropped down to 3 running days (1 speedday, 1 tempo day, 1 longrun day), 2-3 cross train days.

Speed Training Night:  2 1/2 mile warm up (ran with Brian). Then 800 meter with 2 minute rest X 4.  Goal was to stay at 4 minutes (8:00 pace) for 800 meter.

Splits looked like this (in minutes not pace):  4:01; 3:56; 3:57; 3:52

We had 30 mph wind gusts, I used my Garmin vs. the track to record distance.  Also ran in one direction with slight crosswind.

FELT INCREDIBLE!!!!! I was alittle concerned that I couldn't keep that pace but I DID IT!!!!

Also weight trained:  Shoulders, bi's and tri's.

Brian's birthday today.  So in celebration.... we did no training, ate bad and topped it off with some incredible chocolate cake that Heather made!!!  For Brian's birthday dinner, he chose: thin crust pizza, wings, antipasta salad.  So I had it real easy.... pizza place for pizza and salad, KFC for wings, Heather made cake, grocery store for ice cream. And WALAH...the birthday dinner

Where have you been?

From Jodi on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 13:48:22 from 72.2.132.206

Sorry. Lets see, a combo of things happened. I was sick in bed with flu for a couple days, then took another 4 days before I could eat half way normal. (Lost 4 pounds- which is hard for me to do). Went on a little vacation for 5 days in Florida, took my running clothes but for the first time since I started running I didn't run on vacation. Just soaked up the sun and made memories with my daughter. My hubby joined us midway thru the vacation. Flew in LATE Thursday (9th)night. Friday unpacked, did laundry and went to Valparaiso to pick up my race packet. Then Saturday ran a half marathon. Wasn't sure how well I'd do since it had been 18 days since I ran anything.

Unofficial time. I will update as soon as their website posts results.  I'm pretty happy with my time.  The course was alot hillier than I expected.  The first 8 miles I was feeling pretty good keeping approx 9:00 pace, then had to slow down as my body was running on empty. I normally run with a Powerbar (the taffy like kind) just in case, this time I didn't think about bringing one. Big Mistake.
