Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

2008 = 10 races, 3 PR's, 1 first place in age division

I started running in 2006 at age 38/39.  I figured the best way to kick the smoking habit for good was to sign up for a marathon.  (I tend to be alittle extreme)

My first full marathon was the Chicago Marathon 2006 (cold, rainy year) 5:00

Full Marathons: Chicago, Kentucky Derby

Half Marathons:  Indy, Chicago Distance Classic (3 times cool medal), Holy Half (Notre Dame), IU's Inaugural, Joker's Wild (St Louis), Oak Brook Half (ugly medal),Valparaiso Mini, Flying Pig, Virginia Beach Rock N Roll  Times ranging from 2:30 to 2:00.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I really would like to qualify for Boston in 2009.

Personal:

I'm married to an incredible guy, Brian for 20 years (21 in May)!!  We have an amazing 17 year old (soon to be 18) daughter, Heather.  The two are my support system and cheerleaders.

Welcome to the blog! Did you say you got to run around a lake? How fun is that! All I get to run around is traffic. And the drivers here hate runners and bikers. I definately will take the lake over the traffic any day! Keep up the good work!

Welcome to the blog! I hope you find the community to be useful. Find a couple of blogs that you relate to (they have similar goals, they are entertaining) and start posting on them. Also if you put your goals and accomplishments in your profile it will help us to get to know you better. Happy running!

I love to run with friends, especially experienced runners. I feel like half of my running experiences are not actually mine but borrowed. Good job getting out again.

Ran with Greg, Jen & Rick in my territory (flat land).  Finally starting to get some warm weather but what a difference it is with the running.   I'm glad they met at my house because I wasn't feeling 100% this morning and probably would have skipped out.  I took a couple walk breaks and held back alittle.  Afterwards it always feels so great.  My pool is still extremely cold so I dipped my legs in knee high and took a 20 minute ice bath.  My calves have really been sore lately, not sure what's going on. It's hard to decide if I should block it or back off.

Walked with 2 non-running friends in the hills of Alabama.  Atleast it was some form of exercise. Although I could have covered more ground by myself. It was nice to have the company and they tried their best.  I would have dropped them off and started running but we had a time restraint.

Walked/slow run with a non-running friend in the hills of Alabama.  It was very warm and humid. We didnt have much time but managed to squeeze it in.  I hope this will help kick start her into exercising again.

Tonight was a walk/run mix with more walking than running.  I was on a motorcycle traveling back from Alabama to Indiana for  15 hours yesterday. It was a long day and no time to exercise so I needed to do something.  Plus got new shoes including switching brands so thought I break them in easy.

What a great day for a run!  I tried pushing my pace alittle. Here's the results:  1.5 miles = 10:58 approx a 1 minute rest (walked in circles) then return was at a slightly slower pace 1.5 miles 11:52.

Ran w Jen flat route.  Today was definately work. No aches and pains. Just the thick air.  I told her about this blog, because she'd like to qualify for Boston too (just missed it her first time around).  Hot/Humid/Windy

I may go back out tonight when it cools down. (Now there's severe thunderstorms moving through will have to wait and see)

I'd love to qualify for Boston too (someday) - but have to speed up even more than you do.

One day I'm gonna come back and run Chicago too. I grew up in the suburbs and worked downtown - so its a 'must' on my marathoning to do list.

I'm hoping this blog will help take us to the next step towards qualifying.

School Block walk very little run 4 miles. Then 2 additional miles w Brian to watch my stride/posture.  School block was meant to be a run but couldnt get my legs to go. Sharp pain in left calf and lower back of right leg going from calf to ankle.  Not sure what's going on. I've had 3 days off, warmed up with 1 mile walk (unusual for me), light stretching after warm up, did not even have the chance to run fast, weather was cool.  No soreness when I walked except the broken spirits.  After the 4 mile *walk*, was home approx. 15 minutes went back out with Brian to explain/demonstrate what was going on and actually felt alittle better and was able to slowly run.

Try running much slower than you normally do and shorter but still 6 days a week. Make up for the lack of intensity and volume with extra cross training (e.g bike). The idea is if there is a pace that is slow enough and a distance that is short enough that allows you to run with the same or lesser level of pain in 24 hours, then we are on to something good. We found a method that allows you to teach your muscles to run better while your joints, ligaments, and bones are able to get stronger. So we do that very gradually increasing the volume and intensity until you are able to run normally.

Healthy diet and adequate sleep make a big difference as well for injury healing and body adaptation to training loads. Start by doing your best on the diet front - if you believe it is bad, do not eat it. On the sleep - set a bed time curfew and stick to it.

From Jodi on Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 14:56:10

Thanks! I slowed down alittle and decreased the miles, it seems to be working. Maybe I freaked out over nothing.

Was this a race? You should enter it as a race report. How did it go for you? I think it was 1/2 weekend. There were lots of 1/2's raced :)

From Jodi on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 21:04:43

Yes. I'm not sure how to enter in race report. It went awesome. 2:05:38 Wasnt my fastest time, wasn't my slowest time but it was my easiest time.

By the way, thanks for the comment, I was beginning to think I was all alone.

From marion on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 21:38:17

you're NEVER alone :) To enter a race report, you check the box next to where you enter your mileage for the day. It will change the screen to a race report screen. Voila! :)

Your time is AWESOME! 2:0_? was my goal for HObble creek half next weekend... until i got injured :(

From marion on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 23:56:54

Went around the school block, I always thought it was 4 miles, I think it may be closer to 3.75 miles.  Took Red (dog) with me, thought we'd just go for a nice walk, he acted like he wanted to run.  So it turned into a slow run. We stopped a few times so I could cool him down with some water since his tongue was about to drag the ground.  We finally made it back, he laid down and slept most of the day. Hope I didnt break him.  Was planning on going out later for another round (by myself) and possibly some biking (bicycle) but instead took off with friends for a motorcycle ride to dinner.

Do you have a running group that you run with a lot or just a group of friends? I have thought about joining our little town's running club but haven't decided yet!

From Jodi on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 14:51:36

Just friends although we have kicked around the idea of starting our own running club. The nearest two around are about 25 miles away and one of them is in a different timezone.

If you have the opportunity to join one and it's fairly convenient. I'd definately would try it out. I know with just our group of 5 (at the most), it makes running a whole lot easier on the days you could easily blow it off. Then there's always the safety in numbers thought. And shorter days - darker earlier is better to run with a group so you can be spotted by cars.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox.

I'm envious!!

(or saundering out to follow me a little ways).  I wanted to try a new route that I came up with (with the help of activetrainer.com). It was a 11 miles loop, well kinda a figure eight.  I knew Red couldnt keep up or be able to make it so I had to be sneaky.  The route was incredible. Just enough hills to give it a challenge, hardly any traffic, encountered only one house that had the dogs out.  Perfect morning for a run.

My hair looks HORRIBLE before and after the run. I figure it is a sort of personal protection ;)

From Jodi on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 17:49:31

April - I personally think I run differently on a treadmill, my strides are shorter and kinda feel like a hamster scurrying to not fall off. Ok maybe not that bad. But it does take me a while to relax and go with a more natural stride. Also, it's very easy to quit on a treadmill. Where as if you're outside you need to atleast run back.

That's devotion!--running with a cold. I can just see you running dragging a dog along behind you--that would be a task--Is Red a large dog? With the name I have a mental image of an Irish Setter.

From Jodi on Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 07:30:47

Red's a Redbone Coonhound, he's about the height of a Irish Setter approx 85 pounds. Someone dumped him, my sister in law found him, I adopted him. He's a pretty laid back dog.

This is the first time I've ever tried "running through a cold". I think it's actually helped me get over it quicker.

I think I may have a tibia stress fracture.  I've be fighting a pain in a very distinct place for atleast a couple of months. Havent said anything to anyone because I don't want to quit running. But it has come to the point where I may have to take some time off so I can train hard at the beginning of the year for a spring marathon.  I'm debating on going to the doctor or just diagnosing myself. I really don't like spending money at a doctor's office when they're going to tell me something I'm pretty sure I know....but I'd hate to take the time off from running for something that may not exist (although it seems very real).  I'm driving my family nuts because I finally told them what I thought was wrong and that I was going to take the month of December off only from running, (I'm scared of gaining weight and/or losing my fitness level). Yesterday (Monday- I forgot Im catching up on blogging) I could cry at the drop of a hat because I made the decision. Day 2 (Tuesday) I'm back to the denial stage. Maybe it's all in my head.

Well I did it. I called and got an appt with the sports medicine doctor for Monday. Decided along with the persuation of a couple of friends its better to know what exactly is wrong. That way I won't be questioning my decision for 4 weeks.  Makes sense. Just hate to spend the money.

Went to a Powercut class tonight with Kelly.  It was fun, made me realise how much strength I've lost since I haven't been strength training (5 days a week like I used to).  The class didn't bring my heartrate up but it did tax my muscles.

I'm feeling antsy.  It's going to be a loonnnnggg wait til Monday.  Actually I might get on the gazelle for a while.

Oh dear, I hope it is not a stress fracture! Is it making running pretty painful? Do blog about the appointment and what the diagnosis is....It seems like injuries are pretty rampant on the blog lately.

From marion on Wed, Dec 03, 2008 at 22:43:25

Oh Jodi! I am SO sorry! I hope you are dead wrong and that it is a phantom pain that really does not exist! :) The Doc is a GREAT idea!!! I can't wait to hear what he/she says! Hang in there!!!

PS- I am a brunette now! Eeeeeek!

Hang in there! The best thing about getting injured right now is that we are heading into the dead of winter. ;D This way if you have to stay down- it isn't when the birds are chirping and your shorts and running shoes are calling to you! Hang in there Hon- it's all going to be alright! Is that a song? "Every little thing's... gonna be alright!!"

I'm pretty sure this is the most pathetic week of miles I've had since I started running.  2 more days til I find out if I really have to take it easy.  Say a little prayer for me.

*** NOT A STRESS FRACTURE WOOHOO***

Went to the doctor today, everything pinpointed to a stress fracture except the x-ray.  He said with it being a couple months it should have shown on x-ray if there was one. He reviewed my running log (thanks to this blog it was easy to print and have ready).  I also need new shoes. For some reason I can only get about 300-350 miles out of a pair.

Bottom line, treating like a shin splint, ice massage, anti-inflamatory, cross train. Ease back into running, keep up cardio through biking, pool running, eliptical.  Next appt 4 wks unless pain is gone.

So here's my plan:  Tues- walk on treadmill   Wed- Powercut class  Thurs - Run with friends (or attempt) .

I'm from IN too...Crown Point. Although right now "home is where the Air Force sends us".

YEAH!!! I am so glad it is nothing huge and devastating--now the hard part is taking it easy--it is so HARD

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 22:43:14

Okay the computer posted my last comment before I was done typing--anyway it is very hard to take it easy but take it as easy as you can stand it as far as running so it can heal quickly!

I got on the treadmill with a 3 mile goal in mind.  Made it one mile (walking). Pretty sore, tried relieving pressure by holding myself up on sidebars to try to run. I may try again later wanted to let everyone know the update.

Ouch if it hurts to walk I don't know that you should run on it...maybe just one week without any running/walking/impact--just cross-training that doesn't hurt and maybe you could get it all cleared up? One week of no running or walking will not hurt your fitness. You could just cross-train all week on a bike ore elliptical(yuck) or whatever so you don't go crazy, and then re-evaluate your pain??? I know it is so hard not to run--it about killed me last month!

p.m. 27 degrees snow/sleet mix. (That's always fun). Decided to try to run to gym (5 mi) and ride home with Brian. Traffic vs. Treadmill.  It wasn't to bad, only had to hit the snowbank once and it was when I got to town. Apparently the lady couldn't get the concept that there might be something ahead since the 3 cars ahead of her moved to the other lane.

Anyway, I made it to the gym. Brian wasnt done lifting so I hit the bike for 1.25 miles. Good enough.  Came home and iced.  My leg's pretty sore. Grrr
